RCF Delivers Mega-Watt Stadium Audio at MHP Arena Stuttgart
)
The MHP Arena in Stuttgart is now home to a high-capacity RCF audio system, serving all 61,000 seats and public zones. Unveiled in August 2023, the system meets UEFA and FIFA requirements and includes over 400 speaker modules, with a total continuous output of more than 1 megawatt.
As well as providing full-range audio for matches and events, the system also operates as a certified voice alarm ensuring the venue meets modern safety standards without the need for a separate emergency audio infrastructure.
The project team included Ebert Ingenieure’s Managing Director Matthias Zorn, with engineering support from Richard Merget of RM Audio Engineering. AVEO GmbH oversaw installation and worked closely with Marcus Bretschneider, Head of Arena Operations and Services at VfB Stuttgart.
Wolfgang Huber of AVEO explained the challenge of working with the stadium’s unique roof structure:
“The roof structure of the MHP Arena is based on ring-shaped and radial steel cables. Both the attachment and the dimensioning of the loudspeaker systems and their mounts were therefore subject to considerable restrictions. The use of standard rigging components was not possible.”
He continued: “Despite this, the installation was worth the effort. We developed special components for rigging and our collaboration with the RCF ESG team made the integration much easier. The focus was on optimising the weight of the overall system.”
Georg Hofmann from RCF Germany’s Engineering Support Group added:
“The dual use of the system as a voice alarm plays a crucial role, as it aids in the efficient evacuation of the stadium during emergencies without the need to install a secondary audio system.”
The installation includes:
-
187 HL40WP line array modules
-
36 HL 38-S subwoofers
-
16 HL2290/HL2260 horn speakers
-
73 P 4228W modules
-
32 Compact C45's
All powered by 66 XPS 16KD amplifiers on a Dante™ network, delivering 264 audio channels at 4,000 watts each. A custom Q-Sys plugin enables full control and monitoring.
Since going live, the new RCF system has received positive feedback from teams, operators and fans alike for its performance and coverage.
