Lighting Beyond The Black Box - Site-Specific Design
For Elanor, as a Lighting Designer who has predominantly worked and thrived within the ‘black box’, there has always been a fascination with creating designs within a site specific and promenade environment.
In this seminar Elanor will be sharing some thoughts and insights into creating lighting designs which lean into the environment the production takes place, including Omidaze all female productions of Richard III and Henry VI in the roof void of the WMC Cardiff, where inspection torches became a key part of the language of the design; to the transmedia production of Galwad and its multi locations of the sea and mountains, where torches were replaced with Astera Titan tubes and pixel bricks.
And then onto lighting designs in historic buildings, including The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth where creating light up books were an obvious design choice for NYTW’s production of Faust.
The session will conclude with the importance of working sustainably and in harmony with the environment with the example of Margam Castle, Port Talbot where Elanor worked last year. Her work here included an early evening site visit with the bat specialist to see the bats' flight routes and to ensure they were not impeded with any light pollution from the fixtures.
