Setting sail for the future: Disney Cruise Line on innovation, storytelling and careers at sea

Entertainment leader Disney Cruise Line continues to expand its fleet and push the boundaries of live entertainment at sea. Ahead of PLASA Focus Leeds where they are an official sponsor, we spoke with Debbie Witheridge, Manager of Entertainment Technical Operations, about upcoming ships, standout projects, and the opportunities the industry offers to those starting out.

What’s next for your company? Any big plans or releases?

We have more new ships on the horizon! Our next ship, the Disney Believe, sets sail in 2027 and by 2031 we will be a fleet of 13 ships.

What was your first role in the industry?

My first ever theatre job was as a dresser on the Cats UK tour. It was a 12-month tour. After that I never stopped working in the theatre world.

What has been your favourite project to work on?

My favourite project to work on has been the Disney Adventure. It stands out because it wasn’t based on an existing ship design, which made it both challenging and exciting from the start. What made it especially rewarding was overcoming the unique challenges of designing for a ship. It’s a project I’m proud to have been part of.

What’s so great about working in the entertainment technology industry?

One of the biggest joys is seeing your work come alive in real time.

How important are trade shows for helping companies generate more business?

They help build trust faster. Face-to-face interaction allows potential candidates to see our product, ask questions and form a personal connection.

What is the overall vision/purpose of your company?

Immersive storytelling at sea. Exceptional service and quality. Innovation in entertainment. Building lifelong memories. With more ships on the horizon, we will continue creating magical family experiences.

What advice do you have for new starters in the industry?

Knowledge is power. The more you learn, the further you can go. Keep pushing yourself to grow, stay curious and never stop exploring new ideas. Challenge your limits, dig deep and discover the creativity that’s already within you.
