Bethan Jarman-Watson
Foundation Student,
University of Derby
Bethan joined the University of Derby last year as a Foundation student. Coming in with boundless enthusiasm, Bethan is currently negotiating the core topics the foundation year covers. This has meant more maths and academic writing skills than most would wish, but also some valuable skills in engineering and electronics. It is easy to get lost in a year group encompassing many students across various courses and disciplines; however, Bethan has already made her mark in many ways. As a member of the Derby Cheerleading Team, Bethan approached the lecturers with a request to provide lights and sound for their end-of-year celebration. This occurred in the 40m x 38m x 15m sports hall. Lighting was needed to provide more glamour than the in-house strip lighting. The only issue was that the gym floor was only available 30 minutes before the event. Several meetings and a couple of planning sessions later, a solution was proposed. Ultimately, the event was a great success and helped present solutions for future events in this space. Bethan did, however, experience the increased pressure of being a key member of the technical staff and a performer. This will probably have been one of the hardest shows of her career so far!
